FAQ
Which radio antenna do I need?
The antenna you need depends on your receiver model and the radio you plan to use, because antennas are not interchangeable across generations:
- Reach RS4 and RS4 Pro use the 860 to 930 MHz LoRa antenna and the 410 to 470 MHz UHF antenna listed for those models, and both ship in the box.
- Reach RS3 and RS2+ use the RS3/RS2+ LoRa antenna. If you want an RS3 to receive corrections from a UHF base, you need the Reach RS3 UHF antenna, which is sold separately.
Which cable do I need?
The cable you need comes down to two questions: which receiver generation, and power or data. Cables for Reach RS4 and RS4 Pro are not the same as cables for Reach RS3 and RS2+, so check the model line on the product page first. Then pick by function.
The DB9 male and female cables carry data only and cannot power the receiver, so choose between them based on the connector on the device you are connecting to.
For continuous power, use the cable for external power supply or the cable without a second connector.
Do I need a survey pole, a tripod, or both?
Whether you need a pole, a tripod, or both depends on how you are running the setup.
A rover needs a survey pole, plus a bipod if you want it to stand freely over a point.
A base needs a tripod (aluminum or wooden), a tribrach, and a rotating tribrach adapter so you can center and level it precisely.
If you are running your own base and rover, you need both sets. The Rover accessories kit, Base accessories kit, and Base and Rover accessories kit bundle these so you do not have to assemble the list yourself.
Will these accessories fit my receiver?
Mounting hardware fits across Reach models because it uses standard 5/8" threads: survey poles, tripods (aluminum or wooden), tribrach adapters, bipods, and the extension pole.
The items that are model-specific are the ones that attach directly to the receiver body: radio antennas, silicone bumpers (RS4 and RS4 Pro are not interchangeable), serial cables, and the quick release adapter, which works with Reach RX2, RS4, and RS4 Pro.
Every product page lists its compatible models, so make sure to check that line before ordering.
What does the quick release adapter do?
The quick release adapter swaps a receiver between a pole and a tripod without threading it on each time, which saves setup time and keeps your antenna height consistent.
It is worth having if one receiver moves between base and rover roles during a job, or if the same unit passes between crews. It is not required for normal operation. Compatible with Reach RX2, RS4, and RS4 Pro.
Can I use a third-party pole, tripod, or tribrach?
Yes, you can use a third-party pole, tripod, or tribrach. Reach receivers mount on a standard 5/8" thread, so survey-grade hardware you already own will work.
For a photo tripod with a 1/4" thread, the thread adapter converts it to 5/8".
Whatever you mount on, enter the pole height in Emlid Flow rather than in your third-party app, and Flow applies the antenna phase center offset for you.
How do I charge receivers in the field?
You charge receivers in the field over USB-C.
The fast charger reaches 80 percent in about 2.5 hours and full in under 3.5 hours, which covers an overnight turnaround for the 16 to 18 hour battery life.
The dual car fast charger handles two devices between job sites.
For a base that needs to run continuously, use the external power supply cable instead of relying on the internal battery.
Which accessories are for the Reach M2 module?
The accessories for the Reach M2 are anything involving a separate GNSS antenna or an autopilot.
The multi-band helical antenna, the Tallysman antenna, the SMA and TNC antenna adapter cables, the antenna extension cable, the Pixhawk JST-GH cables (Pixhawk 1, Pixhawk 2), and the camera hot shoe adapter are all for Reach M2 and M+ integrations into drones, machinery, and other unmanned systems.
RS-series receivers have integrated antennas and do not use any of these.
